ICON: International Coalition on Newspapers

How to participate in the ICON Database

ICON welcomes the participation of libraries wishing to contribute their records to the database.

Participants contributing to the ICON database of international newspapers are expected to:

  • submit information conforming to standards set by the project. Data should accurately describe newspaper titles and holdings within their collection(s)
  • transfer records via a standardized submission method jointly determined by the participant and ICON team (e.g., OPAC file extraction sent via ftp)
  • periodically review and refresh the information contained in the database. This will be done through automatic loading of records, de minimum on an annual basis
  • update, correct, and edit records as needed through a remote administrative tool provided by the project.

Participants are further encouraged to:

  • improve the quality of their bibliographic and holdings data and maintain accurate records at their local institution
  • highlight the ICON database as a resource for their local patrons and refer to it in the course of bibliographic instruction or reference
  • participate in periodic program assessments to help refine the ICON database and related efforts
  • engage in broader cooperation in the ICON project, such as lending issues for preservation projects, sharing information on collection initiatives, and participating in future activities of the project. Future activities might incorporate print retention initiatives, digitization or electronic capture of news information, expedited/preferential loan arrangements, or other possibilities enacted on a cost-recovery basis to ensure the sustainability of ICON.
