ICON: International Coalition on Newspapers

ICON preservation projects

ICON’s Newspaper Preservation Program addresses challenges related to the storage and preservation of international newspaper collections, such as inadequate storage conditions and lack of funds for microfilming. ICON is working to collect and disseminate newspaper preservation policies from around the world. We are also compiling preservation standards for microfilming, digitization, and retaining materials in their original formats. ICON evaluates the viability, historical importance, and impact of all titles proposed for its preservation microfilming. ICON’s preservation microfilming process includes producing a print negative (stored with the microfilm vendor), an archival master negative (stored at Iron Mountain/National Underground Storage) and a positive service copy (added to the collection of the Center for Research Libraries). An additional positive service copy is made for those institutions that loan materials for filming.
