ICON: International Coalition on Newspapers

Newspaper reference resources

ICON is converting a number of key bibliographies, histories, and other reference resources relating to international newspapers. There exist a number of resources for international newspapers that provide valued information for the researcher. These include published material such as Colonial British Caribbean Newspapers: A Bibliography and Directory (Pactor, Greenwood Press), The Black Press in South Africa and Lesotho: A Descriptive Bibliographic Guide to African, Coloured, and Indian Newspapers, Newsletters, and Magazines, 1836-1976 (Switzer, Hall) and Latin American Newspapers in United States Libraries: A Union List by Stephen M. Charno (University of Texas Press).

These materials provide valuable descriptive and contextual information about newspapers. They also point to resources that cannot yet be found in online bibliographic aids.To assist scholars in their use of newspapers, ICON will have a group of bibliographic aids such as those above converted to full-text resources for use on ICON’s Web site. The ICON Selection Committee will be charged with selecting a representative sample of material to make available, and these will continue to be scanned and delivered as digital files to ICON.
